Poker
I got an email on tuesday, the subject heading "a s" ,
in the message was "remember this ? haha"
with a picture of the Ace of Spades attached, the very card that knocked me
out of the Monday Night at Rundle St Poker series. Whilst I laughed out
loud, and it was in fact a good start to the morning, I couldnt help wonder
whether Johnny Chan did likewise when he beat Eric Seidel in the 88
Poker World Championship. JC perhaps sent him a message like
"suck it down seidel, haha".
Whilst cuing up the music on my computer for the night, I thought to myself
if i played songs that people really like, would that lead them to betting
more aggressively and stupidly? I cued up the strokes and the the pixies
for biggs, Dave Brubeck take 5 for myself and eye of the tiger of the horry
, but i regret not adding Johnny Cash's ring of fire for paul.
Anyway going back to Monday night 11pm, Paul had $35 after knocking
out Brad and Biggs, Horry and I had about $7.50 each and in big trouble.
Things were desperate, I went all in on the flop. No one followed. I went
all in again, this time Paul went in. I won $7.50. I went all in against Horry,
my ace and 9 ended up making a boat against his jack and 10, and he
was knocked out. Suddenly I had about $24 versus paul $26. I went all in
again, perhaps 4 times in a row is pushing my luck. I had King Queen versus
Ace 3, a statistical edge to myself.
The flop yielded Queen three six, My pair had his pair beaten. The
10 on the turn helped no one. At this stage I was one card of pulling off
a miraculous come back, and surely Paul's last few dollars wouldnt have
lasted long. But then it fell ... The Ace ... the damn ace, and it was a fitting
conclusion to a great session of poker as eye of the tiger was playing in
the background.
Paul's bowl of coins had just increased again, and in fact it was too heavy
and dangerous for him to carry back. And there it lies in the corner of the
room, a reminder to try and win it back.
